The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency enforces strict requirements regarding the condition and specification of tyres on commercial vehicles across the United Kingdom. Defective or non-compliant tyres identified during roadside checks or annual vehicle tests can result in immediate prohibition notices, preventing the vehicle from continuing until the defect is corrected. In serious cases, operators may face formal enforcement action.
For commercial vehicles over 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight, the minimum legal tread depth is 1mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre width around the full circumference. All tyres must also be free from cuts exposing the ply or cord, bulges indicating internal structural damage, and must be of the correct size and load rating for the vehicle and its operating weight. Any tyre not meeting these standards is a notifiable defect.
Mixed tyre types on the same axle are also prohibited. Fitting a radial construction tyre on one side of an axle and a cross-ply on the other is illegal under UK road vehicle regulations. Similarly, tyres that are incompatible with the wheel rim to which they are fitted, or that show evidence of repairs carried out in a manner not meeting the required standard, will be recorded as defects during inspection.
Maintaining a documented tyre inspection and replacement record for each vehicle in your fleet is valuable evidence of compliance during DVSA operator licence audits. Partnering with a professional mobile tyre service ensures every replacement and repair is carried out to the required standard by qualified technicians who can provide compliant documentation for each service intervention.
